As the sun kisses the Indian Ocean setting off a blaze of colour, Perth’s beach brigade rolls up their towels to relax – it’s been another fabulous day on the sand. Beach culture is hardwired into Perth’s DNA, with an almost unbroken stretch of photogenic beaches spanning Fremantle to Sorrento and beyond. Take a day to explore the mesmerising shore: you’ll find a patch of sand with your name on it. From central Perth, head to the turquoise waters of Sorrento, next door to the popular family-friendly destination Hillarys Boat Harbour and home to AQWA, the Aquarium of Western Australia. Or, spend a serene hour snorkelling Sorrento’s underwater nature trail. Surfing more your speed? Continue south to Trigg for Perth’s most reliable beach breaks, rolling in from the open ocean. Refuel with a well-earned brunch at one of Trigg’s stylish oceanfront cafes. For white-sand perfection, cruise the coast to Scarborough. Unfurl a towel and settle in with a page-turner between swims. Fronting onto the beach, Scarborough’s foreshore is a playground for kids of all ages: sparkling swimming pools, barbecue areas, skate parks, and a variety of restaurants and cafes. At Safe Swimming City Beach, families mingle on the shore as sausages sizzle. The jewel of Perth’s city beaches is your last stop. On the glamorous curve of Cottesloe Beach, swim, surf and paddleboard crystal waters, or munch fish and chips under a swaying Norfolk Island pine. Close out the perfect beach day in Cottesloe’s pubs and classy restaurants, sipping a cocktail in the balmy air as the sun sets fire over the Indian Ocean....

Hillarys Boat Harbour, Hillarys, Western Australia

A popular Perth ritual is to rise early and head to the beach for a morning swim or a coastal walk before breakfast. Take the 20-minute drive on the Mitchell Freeway to Karrinyup Road, and start your day in Trigg and Sorrento – a coastal strip north of Perth that’s got it all. White sand beaches and a family-friendly snorkel spot in Marmion Marine Park, ocean-front cafes for breakfast or brunch and the Sunset Coast walk and cycle path that stretches over 35 kilometres.

Head down the West Coast Highway to Scarborough Beach (just a seven-minute drive) and hang ten with the surfers and body boarders. The buzzing beachside cafes and bars are popular among teens and backpackers, and the outdoor amphitheatre regularly hosts events, such as beach cricket. A more family-friendly alternative to Scarborough is City Beach (approximately 14 minutes from Trigg on the West Coast Highway). This pretty white-sand beach offers sheltered swimming as well as a little surf, with grassed areas, barbecues and cafes providing good options for a lazy lunch.

Get there in time for an afternoon swim, surf or stroll along the coastal path, or just take in the chilled out beach vibe under the shade of the Norfolk pines. Grab takeaway fish and chips to eat on the beach, or head for Cottesloe’s beachside café and restaurant strip for sunset drinks and dinner. Return to Perth via the Stirling Highway and Mounts Bay Road (approximately 15 minutes) for stunning views of Perth’s cityscape lit up and reflected in the Swan River.
