WWII K5 Anti Aircraft Gun Battery Site, Coomalie Creek

The World War II Coomalie Airfield K5 Anti-Aircraft Battery site, constructed 1942 and located on a ridge overlooking Coomalie Airfield adjacent to the Stuart Highway, approximately 83km south of Darwin, is highly significant to the Territory as a relatively intact example of a wartime gun battery position developed for airfield protection against airborne attack. The battery site was occupied by the 2/1 Regiment's 225th Light Anti-Aircraft Battery. Both the airfield and gun battery played an important role in the Allied Force's campaign to drive back the invading Japanese in the South West Pacific Region.
