Leaving Childers in the rear vision mirror, the next discovery is only 10 minutes down the road - Apple Tree Creek. Famous for its rodeos, it also houses the largest free flight walk-in aviary in Australia, at around two acres in size. Thousands of feathered friends await your undivided attention. Departing Apple Tree Creek, half way to the next town, you travel through Booyal, a small dot on the map which can divert you into the North Burnett Shire within the Bundaberg North Burnett Region. They say 'it's so nice they named it twice' - Gin Gin is the next port of call. This town is at the crossroads for discovering the magic of the region, but has a story of its own. Learn the struggle of pioneers against the regions only bushranger - the Wild Scotchman - at the courthouse gallery in the main street, or at the historical society which also holds a country market on a Saturday. The newly transformed and artistic main street shares Gin Gin's journey from the central meeting place of the Wakka Wakka tribe through to today's booming population.

On the outskirts of Gin Gin, within the free rest area, are four monuments representing the town's beginnings and also sharing in its dark past between settlers and aboriginals at Gin Gin Creek. Located nearby is also the gateway through to Mount Perry and the North Burnett. Journeying north on the Bruce Highway 20 kilometres from Gin Gin is Lake Monduran. When this body of water reaches 100 per cent, which it has in recent years, it holds a larger volume of water than the Sydney Harbour. A vital source 'liquid gold' to the farms of the region through many irrigation channels which can be seen throughout. But also is claimed to be the most southerly point in which you can land the elusive 'Barra'. But don't panic if you're unsuccessful as you can cry over those monsters in viewing tanks located behind the caravan park kiosk. Leaving the lake the journey north is a nice easy 80 kilometres to the next town, Miriam Vale, which will lead you to Agnes Water and the Town of 1770, an historic town to commemorate the landing of Captain James Cook in 1770.
