Revel in the open spaces and embrace the country pace in Kilmore, one of Victoria's oldest inland settlements. Wander past nineteenth century bluestone buildings – 40 of which are listed on the Register of National Estate, hear stories from the past, and ride on a hundred-year-old tram to complete the heritage experience. Have lunch in a converted old bluestone building, visit the old gaol, built in 1859, then take a stroll through the many specialty shops selling antiques, arts and crafts to find that gift for someone back home. Be sure to make time for the tramways museum at Bylands, which is part of the true Kilmore heritage experience. Ride on one of the old trams, some of which date back to 1906, and view the collection of cable cars and electric trams which comprise the 'preserved tramway fleet' that were all once in service in and around Melbourne and Adelaide. Hike up Mt Disappointment and see wombats and wallabies and admire the varied bird life. Extreme sports lovers can try hang gliding in Tallarook State Park and visit popular rock climbing sites. Those who prefer a slower pace will enjoy a scenic drive through the picturesque Valley of a Thousand Hills. Get along to one of the fun-filled racing days throughout the year at Kilmore Racing Club, which also plays host to the Kilmore Country Music Festival in March. Kilmore is about an hour from Melbourne along the Hume Highway....
