Tantangara Dam, a concrete gravity dam, is one of the 16 major dams of the Snowy Mountains Scheme. Work commenced on the dam in 1958 and was completed in 1960. Tantangara Dam is 45.1 metres high and 216.4 metres in length. The dam has a capacity of 254 gigalitres, and is on the Murrumbidgee River, wholly within the Kosciuszko National Park. Tantangara is a small reservoir only 1/18 the size of Lake Eucumbene. When water is available it is diverted from Tantangara Dam to Lake Eucumbene via Eucumbene portal. There are consistent diversions from Tantangara Dam to Lake Eucumbene because of the shallow depth of the reservoir and its location in a high wind area. These factors increase the loss of water due to evaporation the longer the water stays in storage in Tantangara Dam. According to the Snowy Hydro Water Report, most years Snowy Hydro will be making releases from the Tantangara reservoir to the Murrumbidgee River. Work for the Snowy 2.0 project is currently being carried out near Tantangara Dam....
