The Village of Glenreagh in the Clarence Valley has a dynamic connection to its timber heritage, with its beautiful original dwellings and its annual celebration of this most beautiful and sustainable material. Set alongside the beautiful Orara River is the village of Glenreagh. Overlooked by magnificent sandstone ranges, much of which is State Forest, Glenreagh is historically a timber town. Even today many of the original timber dwellings still stand. Each year the town hosts the Glenreagh Timber Festival in celebration of its rich woody heritage. Glenreagh is situated approximately 40km northwest of Coffs Harbour (40 kilometres southeast of Grafton) on the "old" Tourist road which runs between Coffs Harbour and Grafton. “Glen Reigh” station was settled in 1858 as a sheep and cattle run, but it was the discovery of gold in 1881 in the nearby Tallawudjah Creek that brought enough people to the area to have Glenreagh gazetted as a village in 1883. Rural settlers moved in after the miners left and dairying and timber were the major industries. A museum built on to the historic School of Arts features relics of the gold mining days, the timber industry and other historic items. The village is known to be the oldest in the Orara Valley. Over the years, the village has continued to grow to a population of approximately 1,100 people within the village and its surrounding areas. Australia loves its “big” things, and in the Clarence Valley, they have theirs right in the middle of Glenreagh. Come and have your photo taken with the Golden Dog, the beloved supersized smiling Dingo! Don't forget to mark the annual Glenreagh Timber Festival in your diary for winter - usually held in July. Proudly on Gumbaynggirr Country....
