Penguin Island is a magnet for nature lovers and is home to a colony of Little Penguins, seabirds and marine life. The moderate 1.5 kilometre loop trail starts at the jetty landing area and allows walkers to experience close encounters with the flora and fauna. Take the booklet Discovering Penguin Island and Shoalwater Islands Marine Park on your walk with you. It features a mud map and other information to help you discover and learn about the plants and animals of the island. It's available from the Penguin Island Visitor Centre at Mersey Point and proceeds go back into management of the island. Guided tours of the island are available through Perth Wildlife Encounters. The Top Trail has a wheelchair accessible boardwalk which provides access between the jetty, picnic area, toilets, the jetty landing area and to the northern lookout. Whilst on the island it's important to stick to the walk trails and demarcated beaches only as the island is a bird sanctuary. The island is only open during the day and the ferry operates from mid-September to early June departing hourly between 9am and 3pm and returning at your leisure, hourly between 10am and 4pm....
